  • Plug wire replacement?

Can the plug wires be replaced on a 1979 XS 1100 SF? Can I get replacement caps for where they attach to the plugs?

Yes, there is a tech tip for replacing plug wires in the coil. Make sure that you test the coil also if you plan to do this, because it is a lot of work with an electric cutting tool through tough plastic. (and wear goggles because hot molten plastic off of a dremmel tool burns)

The caps have a wood-screw-like connector the attaches it into the metal strands of the plug wires. The caps do go bad, either failing when wet, when hot, or just failing all the time. The caps are relatively cheap, about $5.00 or so, and come in different lengths and angles.

The plug caps should be available at any motorcycle shop, or check online for them.

Be sure to check thru the Tech Tips for tips and information on common problems and repair methods for the XS1100.

The closest I've found to match the originals are

        2 each Part# 2051 NGK Plug Cap - LB05F ($2.40 each)
        2 each Part# 20305 XB05F Spark Plug Cap ($3.30 each)

The reason I have all this info is I just got mine 2 days ago.
