  • what does "lightly Seated " mean

What does it mean when people say lightly seated in reference to idle screws? How far do you screw them down before doing the 1 and one quarter turn out?

  • #2
It means don't break the tip off the idle mixture needle by tightening it into the seat.
Best way is to use a "Color Tune" (search tech tips) and you won't come close to 'de-tipping' an idle screw.
If Color Tune not available you might look inside the carb throat for the tip just appearing in the hole and stop there.

        Lightly seated

The screw, if I'm not misshapen, has a spring, a washer, and then a rubber O-ring on it. You turn it in all the way and then back it out the required number o' turns. Now, lightly seated means.... Turn the screw in slowly.... gently... until it just stops. go no further. That is the point where the O-ring is starting to touch. If you jam it in further, the taper of the needle will jam in the taper of the hole and seize in place and snap. Just turning it in gently to the point of slight resistance, and that's it. as for the color tune... I think i did a internet search and found a company that makes them in England for MG's or something. Was about $50-$60 if i recall correctly. Got it a week later. Those english and their MGs! They love those little sports cars. Was working an auto parts store years back..... some english guy walked in. "Hey kid, I ordered parts for my midget.. can you see if they came in?"
        "Sure... what's his name?"

Madsin, one thing that was left-out of the previous reccomendations; while feeling for "slightly seated", use a VERY small screw driver, as in "no leverage"
I once "slightly seated" one, using a long slender screw driver that had a pretty good sized handle on it. Before it felt snug, the tip was gone.
I have a color tune kit that is available, if you get it back promptly.
I plan to use it in about 2 weeks or so.

            Re: Lightly seated

Maybe I am all "washed up", but I don't remember the oring and washer in the older model carbs...I only remember them in the 80 and 81 carbies.

I don't think you will find them in your neighbourhood parts store. They are available from these people: Colortune

                My error

Thank you Skids, I stand corrected. Just checked the service manual. Haven't had my 79's carbs apart for a while, Hhmm.. if at all! I shall now confine my replies to the areas that I actually know something about.

"We won't be hearing from him again, huh fellas?"
                heheheehh

                  Madsin,
Come on down the hill and you can borrow mine.
Or we can do it at my house.
I got mine off Ebay for $20.
