how do you disassemble the diaphragm/slide needle assembly?

I have decided to take everyones advie, and have taken apart my carbs, and am now trying to figure out how to get the slide needle apart from the daiphragm assembly in order to check if the needle is set in the proper position. How do I get it apart. Also ,any tricks on getting the pilot jet out,the tube is so small that I have to use a small screwdriver, but the brass screwhead is getting marred, and I dont want to strip it,advice?

I believe you need a long pair of snap ring pliers. I believe it was a snap ring that holds the needle jet in. A real pain to get out without one, don't bother asking me how I know that.

There should be a couple of small screws holding a retainer that holds the needlein place. Just down inside the slide, and you will see them. Only 78-79 carbs are adjustable.

        Hey Madsin,

For the pilot jets, you need to take a screwdriver that WILL fit the slot snugly, but the width will be too wide, you then take a grinding wheel, dremmel, file, and grind down the width of the screwdriver so that it will fit into the hole, that way you are using the largest screwdriver you can, to make contact with the full width of the jet slotted head.

Since it's already marred up, and they do break easily, you may want to spray some penetrating fluid down there, and also apply some heat to the side of the carb to help expand the body which may also help it to loosen its grip on the pilot jet.

If you'll go to the yamaha parts catalog, you can see exploded views of the parts for your bike, so you can see how things are put together!

Where do I get snap ring pliers?

Where would I find Snap ring pliers to get out the piece that holds all the slide needle components in place?

I couldn't. I brought it to a shop and the guy did not have one either. He used a metal pick to grab it and pull it out.

I tried harbor frieght and they did not have one long enough. I thought about a long needle nose because I found a long one and grind it down. Works in reverse of snap ring pliers but in theory it should work.
