  • Pickup Coils

To all of my fellow XS and XJ'rs. I am having a time with my pickup coil wires and wonder if anyone has ever REPLACED them all the way to the generator? Is it possible to drill out the pickups themselves in order to insert new wiring?

    Thanks,

    Tom

    don't connect them there!

    Hi Tom,
The wires from the pickup coils go to a multi-pin connector.
The other half of the connector goes to the Ignitor Unit.
(depending on the bike's year, the neutral switch wire might or might not be included in that multi-pin connector)
Connecting the pickup coils to the generator instead will not give a good result.
The Tech Tips section should show how to replace broken pickup coil wiring, run the replacements right back to the multi-pin connector, why not?
Memory says the Tech Tip shows soldering new wiring into the clipped short ends of the old, utilising the very flexible wire that is used for multi-meter leads.
I'd try that ahead of trying to drill the wire out of the pickup.
