    Dot 5 vs Dot 3??

One of the answers to my earlier post on caliper paint, reccommended using Dot 5 brake fluid.
It says right on the reservoir to use Dot 3, but in 1980 Dot 5 probably didn't even exist.
Other than making certain to COMPLETELY flush the entire system before introducing Dot 5, is there anything that I need to be aware of?
Are there other XSives that have made this switch?
    TIA
    Mike

If I recall, Dot 5 is silicon based, tough to pour, tough to get bubbles out, and absolutely not compatible with DOt 3-4. If you 'clean out' your brake system you will likely leave some residue of 3 in there. I would stick to 3 or 4 if I had 3 in for the past 25 years, unless you are replacing everything.

See TC's post , I answered that one. Been using it for years with no problems.

I have been using DOT5 for almost 5 years in my XS. As long as you flush *all* of the old fluid out, you will have no problems. Anytime you hear about someone having an issue with using DOT5 fluid, 99% of the time it can be traced to failure to flush the old fluid properly or seals that should have been replaced beforehand.
