  • Spark/Heat Problem

    Hey Guys,

First time to post on the new Forum and I need to ramp up with all the changes. I've been busy riding and doing other fun summer stuff. My problem started when I was on my way to XSEast2002 and is still driving me nuts (I didn't have far to go). It appears to be heat related as it NEVER happens when the engine is cold or cool, short trips are ok, the colder the outside temp the farther I can go without problems (that's why it ran ok at XSEast ;-)). What I believe happens is that I lose spark (I could be wrong) in 1 or 4 or both for an instant when running slow to medium speed after engine has heated up. If I pour on the throttle it gets worse if I pull in the clutch and idle for a second it clears and I get a little backfire. Proceeding down the road for another 5 miles it will happen again, idle, backfire clears up and repeat. Now if I get on a super slab and crank it up to 70 or so it will NEVER happen but as soon as I get on a secondary road at moderate speed it starts again. I suspect a coil but would they be that flakey? I thought coils either work or don't work. Do coils react to heat? What else could it be that is so intermittent and heat related?

Coils like any electrical device will react to heat, a hot coil could open then be OK when it cools a little. There was a guy who just posted about losing 2 cylinders when hot. Check out this thread for some ideas:
