  • Headlight Relay Switch

Folks, my headlight relay switch is toast. The part as far as I can ascertain is discontinued. Any ideas? Thanks.....

    First, welcome to XS11 heaven.

Are you sure it's the relay? If your tach is working, chances are you can suspect the relay. If your tach is dead, your trouble may be in the charging system. The headlight relay gets it's signal from the same source as the tach signal, from the stator.

If you're sure its the relay, you have a few options.

The first way to solve your problem is to bypass the relay, there is a post here on the site explaining how to do it. Be aware, though if you do it, you will loose the headlamp warning light function.

The second way is to search ebay, there are relays available there from time to time.

Or, if you're handy with electronics, you can substitute a 12v DPDT relay using one pole to latch the relay.

And last, if you are patient, someone here will probably offer you one of their spares!

    Hope this helps.

Thanks so much Randy. Tach is fine. I will search for how to circumvent the relay. Much appreciated.

thats a bummer, i had two of them, gave them away a few months ago to a member on the board here. If i run across some, i'll let you know. Actually i was just thinking, isn't there a diode in line from the stator to the relay to convert the ac current to dc(i think thats what it does). you might want to check that as well. If you need a replacement diode, i have one from the harness that i bought from chevy4542001. - jr

I don't know about a diode, there's no diode on my schematic for my 79F?

            I stand corrected!

hmmm let me check my 82 XJ Schem. Yeah your right no diode for the headlight here. i have no idea where i got that from. iv'e been sick with the flu lately, my head is not on straight thanks for the correction. but in my schematics i see no relay for the headlight either. maybe that applys only to some earlier xs models? hmm i wonder. Thanks!
