Side Cover Mounts

Hello All,


For those of you that read my last post you already know Im pretty new to this whole thing. But anyways. I was hoping that someone could tell me or better yet post a picture of how the side cover panels mount to the frame. When I got the bike they were simply zip tied in place to hold them on. Without the ties they seem to flop around quite a bit, if not just fall off. Ive been trying to see if I could make some new mounts or if the olds ones are there and I just don’t know how they set in place. Thanks in advance.

they mount using the 2 slots on the top of the cover

the right side has a small post at the bottom of the cover that pops into a rubber grommet on the frame

on the left, there is a L shaped post that sticks into a locking mechanisam, that unlocks with a key, most people tend to break that one off, being unaware of the keylock, and just pulling

Now what kind o' clown would try to take the left side cover off without first unlocking it? Everybody knows that doing that breaks off the little plastic latch thingie. Guys like that really don't deserve machines like XS's. If he's really lucky, he might be able to stick it back together. Crazy glue works. I mean.... crazy glue MIGHT work..., from what I'm told...., not that I'D really know, you understand. I'm not like that. I'm just passing this tip along in case some inexperienced XS owner thinks he knows it all and doesn't want to admit to his ignorant mistakes.

this summer i was lucky enough to aquire 3 XS11s
for parts, 1 didn't have side covers, but did have the thingy still stuck in the lock
the other 2 had the right side covers held on with a bungee cord
bet you can't guess why

xswilly described the cover mounting for a Standard, and it’s the same for a Special - don’t know which you have, but covers come up frequently on E-bay, although they are getting rarer.

If you don’t already know, one site that is a must for all XSives to mark as a favorite is the Yamaha OEM parts look up.

Input the year and model, and then click on the sub-system, or area of the bike where you need the part; there is a specific section titled “Side Cover”. When you click on it, you’ll see an exploded diagram, which you can zoom in to magnify. It clearly shows the mounting points, the cover “prongs” and the grommets on the frame mount points.

Also, there are many online dealers that offer the same parts look up service - if they show a price for the part, then it is still available and can be ordered. One that I use is Xtreme Powersports, but there are many others.
