Nice site, Randy. Well done. The only thing missing is the fact that you build S/S brake hoses for these bikes. Swamp Thing looks great!
Bubba, your bike looks great too!

        Thanks, John.

I don't mention the brake lines fo a couple of reasons. One, my ISP won't allow any commercial use of the site, otherwise they'll slap me with whopping fees! And second, I don't want to be in the brake line business, I just do that for us folks here.

I hope the TCI info is helpful, I'll be expanding it as time permits.

          Bubba,

Stock? Let's see....Most of us HAVE to change some things or we'd be asking for trouble!

          Other than the:

          Custom Paint.

          Aftermarket Exhaust.

          XS-Special Mirrors.

New ATO / ATC Fuse Box.

          Hand Painted Emblems.

          S/S Brake lines.

Yeah, she's pretty close to 'stock', but how did you get that showroom-fresh look on yours?

"how did you get that showroom-fresh look on yours?"

Well, I was lucky enough to buy it from the original owner last year. He recently got a divorce and ran out and bought a new Goldwing.

This is my second '79 factory dresser. I owned a Brown one back in 1980'.

              Thanks John,

I've admired yours for some time too. If I remember correctly, your transplanted New Englander. Hope your Pats clobber the Dolts this weekend!

                Update to TCI Repair Facts:

As you know, I've been repairing these TCI's for quite some time now. Today I came accross a second version of 2H7 TCI. I've posted the update on my website, with photos.

So far, this makes a total of three diffrent versions of TCI's supplied with the XS11. I call them 2H7, 2H7 Type 2 and 4RO.

I've also posted a description of a quick TCI test that you can do with the unit still on the bike.

Thanks Randy for filling my brain with all your info on the elevens brain. I purchased two 4ro's and three 2h7's. It's an expensive way to answere a question and make sure I never face this problem again.Your web page is great.

                      Hi Randy,

Great web page! Lots of good electronic knowledge and details on the TCI. Do you have a background in electronics?

I’m a decent wrench, but those electronic “gizmo’s” are like a foreign language to me. Not like the old “points and condenser” ignition on my ’66 BSA. I do have a spare TCI for my ’80 SG, so if something ever goes bad on my current one, thanks to your well explained test procedures, I’ll now be able to diagnose it, and use the spare. By the way, after I’ve taken it to the quarter car wash for a good bath, my bike exhibits the same common failure you described in your site, ie, it loses two cylinders. It runs that way for several miles until something dries out, and presto, it’s fine again. I’m assuming it is the coils or wires, even though they are tucked under the tank. After that happened twice, and I limped home on 2 cylinders, I stopped taking it to the hi pressure wash - just use a bucket, and garden hose now.

Your bike looks great! You said custom paint -is that the Yamaha “New Ruby Red”, or something close? And “hand painted emblems” - are they the raised type? If so, how did you paint them?

I see you’re from Stroudsburg - I live just down the road in Bethlehem. Maybe we’ll get to ride some day?

                      Thanks again for your site.

                        Hey, Rick

We definitely have to go riding here in the Lehigh Valley this Spring. I was riding down your way on New Year's day. Now the Swamp Thing is tucked away for the winter.

I have a background in electronics and enjoy troubleshooting. Finding replacement part for the TCI's was a real challenge.

Your problem after washing is probably the plug caps/wires getting wet. thay will short and misfire when wet.

As or my paint, it's GM Medium Garnet from Duplicolor with their high heat clear coat. The emblems were painted by hand with the gold sprayed, the black brushed on and clear coated.

Let's get in touch as Spring breaks.

                        Randy
