  • Front axle assembly sequence - Special

Just in case you were wondering how things go together on the front axle of a Special:

    (wheel removed of course)

Also discovered tonight that while the nut and cotter pin is on the left side on a Special, it is on the right side on a Standard. That must be another one of Yamaha's inside jokes, just like the chrome lettering on tank emblems on a Midnight...

That would be even more interesting if you took the photo of all of the parts in one line from left to right. Makes it even easier to visualize.

So Ken, do you have a 79sf with the funky front brake setup? Still trying to figure out how to align the discs inside the calipers / align the front wheel to the brakes....

Ben, the way I do it is to remove the calipers from their mounts and remove the fender, then turn the forks to allow the tire to be removed. On reassembly, I reinstall the tire, insert the axle and reinstall the fender. Then I reinstall the calipers to the fork and then tighten the axle. The calipers are the last thing that I tighten, and I haven't had any problems following that procedure.

Thanks John. I'll post my results as soon as I can get an hour in the shop.

        There was also this thread.

Ben - I actually tried that first, but it made for a pretty long, narrow photo. In this one, the parts are sequenced left to right and top to bottom.

Ken, what kind of digital camera do you have? Do you doctor the pics in Photoshop or is your lighting and pic quality always that good/clear?

I'm shooting now with a Fuji Finepix S7000, and most of the time I just shoot handheld in auto mode. While it is capable of shooting to 4048x3040 pixels, I usually shoot at about half that resolution, use a programme called EzTouch to downsize further to 640x480, then finally save from there to a medium quality image. This brings the image down from about 1,600KB coming out of the camera to 81KB posted for final viewing.

Ken, I use an S7000 too and love it.

A note about removing the front tire - Don't remove the fender, just let the air out of the tire and pull the bolts out of the calipers.
