  • Lost key--- Replace or Customize?

    Okay fellow XSives,

Your challenge should you choose to except it is. How do I get around the ignition key being lost. What wires to I need to wire to a switch toggle or whatever to make it work. Also how do I get the gas cap off without the key. This is why I dont take the keys out of the bike I lose them. Crap...

I am in need of some XSiveness for this weekend.

    Thanks

    John

    Hey there Springer,

The gas cap is easy, there's a little spring loaded lip on the front/forward end of the cap, you just need an angled slightly pointed piece of metal to pry under the cap edge, and pull away from the center of the cap "while" pushing down a little on the cap to release the catch, and then the cap can be opened! I thought there was a number etched into the lock mechanism on the cap, or even the ignition switch, that you can jot down and take to your local Yamaha shop and they can cut you a new key!?

As for the ignition, just short the RED wire to the YELLOW wire, and you should be good. The Blue wire is only for setting the Parking lights in Park Mode.

While you have the Ignition switch out, you can take it to a Locksmith and they can make a key as well, so depends on which way you want to go at it!?

Good luck and have an Excessively good time!

What # is on the ign. and or fuel cap? Someone may have a match and can cut/send you a key.
On the triples list someone setup a database with owners/key numbers so we help each other out. He keeps this list private, not open to the public. He's lets the person with a key know someone needs a copy and passes contact info on. This person also won 600 XS keys on Ebay so alot of the time he has it himself.

        triples list??

        Hey Pat,
*where* does one find the triples list? I've looked all over the XS11 board; 'thought it would be in either it's own subdir. or under Links... also did a Google, Webcrawler, and Lycos search.
        ...'couldn't find a single mention.

look in Yahoo Groups and search XS750 (also XS1100 for the 'other 1100 group).
          Also check (I think) www.ytriples.com

Take the number to the Yammy dealer and they will order you a key. I have done it several times.

You can also call your local locksmith and ask them if they have key blanks and the key codes for your model. If they do than they can cut you a new key. The Yamaha shop I worked at also had a locksmith shop and he had all the motorcycle code books and key blanks. Yamaha, honda, kaw's etc... the numbers on the ignition switch, gas cap and helmet lock are the codes needed for the new key.

Take the ignition with you. Any competent locksmith can make a key from it, and the number pn it might not mean anything to anyone outside of the Yamaha dealer.

I agree with just taking the switch or helmet lock to a competent lock smith and have them cut you a new key.
