I think Clymer is the only aftermarket manual available. I still see it a major cycle shops. The Clymer is fairly accurate. It comes in two flavors. The first addition '78 & '79 and the second edition which is the same as the first, except it has an addition in the back for '80 & '81s.

I have been able to pick up factory manuals on eBay.

If by "owner/operator manual " you mean the book that came with the XS when new, then check with Yamaha. They were making photocopies available at no charge at one time.

If you're looking for a repair manual, then follow Denny's advice.

FYI the Yamaha Motors website has some service manuals available - 79 XS for $60.00 USD: (Not sure if the public is allowed here)

A lot of us use Clymers or Haynes:

          Hey there Virgin1100xs,

Wow, 2 Virginia Newbies in one week, you and Morgzilla!!!!! I'm just across the city line in Portsmouth!!!! I have made a PDF file owner's manual for the 81 H/SH series from my original, it's essentially the same for the earlier models, aside from the extra technical stuff like carbs, you can find it in the LINKS section, about 6MB Download!!

Welcome, hope to get to meet up with you soon!

            Just as a reminder....

Yamaha has on-line microfiche parts lists at:

They list factory available manuals and literature at:

As MartyA noted, manual cost $60.00 US.... a bit steep, in my opinion, but for the rider who has everything.....

main URL to use as a starting point for manuals, parts, and other Yamaha information is:

Another option is to get the manual on CD from Rob Mills He charges next to nothing for it, and it's got a lot of information on it concerning the XS.
