  • Idle speed

My 80 XS11 runs again. Now to find all the quirks and the bugs.It runs quite well with the exception that when it is warmed up and been run a ways the idle speeds rises to about 1300rpm+-.Any clues or info about that prob would be appreciated.......Seasons greeting.......

      Hey there JackStarr,

Simplest thing is to check the idle screw down in the middle of the carbs, big knurled thumbscrew, hard to get to, usually need a screwdriver to push on it once the bike is warmed up. Try turning it back a few turns and see if the idle comes down!? If the screw is backed out to where the throttle plate isn't making contact with the end of it, and the idle is still high, then many things may need to be checked!? The Pilot screw settings, the carb synchronization, also checks for vacuum leaks, etc.! Also check to make sure the throttle plate isn't hanging up on one of the screws for the rubber mounts, the large Ring clamps, and make sure your throttle cable doesn't have any kinks in it, that there is enough free play in it, and that it isn't binding up thru it's travel! Write back with more info after you've checked these out!

Often a fast idle after warm up is due a lean idle mixture. Try opening (CCW) each of the idle mixture screw 1/4 turn. If the idle speed goes up, you may have found the problem. If it does, leave the idle mixture were it is and lower the idle speed.

What happens with a lean idle mixture, is the idle speed must be turned up to achieve the 1100 rpm ilde. It is possible to open the throttle valves enough to cause on or more of the slides to open slightly. Adjusting the idle circuit should permit the idle speed screw to be backed off enough to prevent any slides from opening.
