  • 1979 XS 1100 Coil resistance

Still trying to get my baby running right. It goes blub blub when starting out and has a little back fire. Seems to be ok at higher RPM's. already spend hours going through the carbs and they should be perfect. Checked coil resistance and it is 25K on 2-3 and 36K on 1-4. Is this a real problem as I know the book states 15K +-20%.
    Thanks

That reading would make the coils fire poorly at the low idling voltage. Did you check your spark plug caps? Take them off, cut about 1/2 inch from the wires and reinstall them. Might help

While you're at it, taking the plug caps off, check them for resistance, and then recheck your coils after trimming(if needed) without the plug caps on. The plug caps have built in resistors, and the contacts inside the parts(springs, resistor, contacts) can develop corrosion and increase the resistance. Should be only about 5K, but if they are much higher, then you might want to consider replacing them!

You can take them apart if you want to experiment, there is a flat screwdriver fitting inside the part where the plug fits, and once you unscrew that, the other parts will come out, you may be able to clean up the corrosion!?

Thanks for the input. I removed the caps and both coils checked out at 15K. Checked the caps themselves and the 2-3 ones were 5k each and 1-4 were 10k each. Still working to get the jetting out. I turned the pilot screws out to 3 turns and the back firing went away. Is still burbling from start. Plugs are a little on the white side so when up to 150's. Have not tried that out yet. I had 145's. Running pods and a pipe 4-1, not sure of the manufacture.
Boy this has been some adventure. I can now remove the seat, tank and carbs in lest than 60 seconds. I just want to get this baby running right. And now I see the right petcock leaking a little.
