i just got my 1979 xs100 this past summer, i'm wondering if theres a way to tell if i have an "E", "F" or a diffrent model, and what is the diffrences between them?? all i can see on my bike is XS1100. i do know i dont have the special....any help would be appreciated, thanks john..oh yea..my fav. bike songs would have to be highway star by deep purple, roll me away by seger...and runnin on empty thanks again..kaz

One easy way might be to look at some pictures and compare.

my vin # starts out A, has a bunch of #'s then a 2H702 so im assuming its a 1979xs1100F..thanks for the info!! been on the road last 3 months havent been on line....its nice to be home lol

The 2H7 tells you that it is a 78 standard, as there was no special in 78.

If it's 2H7-00xxxxx then the serial # refers to 78E. If it's 2H7-02xxxxx then the serial # refers to 79F

1978, E , the only model built that year. 1979, F, standard model, SF, special model w/smaller gas tank and leading axle forks. 1980, G, standard model, SG, special, quite similar to the SF, LG, midnight special, all black special model. 1981, H, standard model, SH, special model, LH, midnight special, and in 81, also had the Venturer, I don't know what the letter designation was, if any. So, E started in 78, F in 79, G in 80, and H in 81. S plus the year letter was for the special, and L plus the year letter was the Midnight Special, the one with gold trim and all black engine, pipes, handlebars, and other doodads.
