carb cleaning

Hi,

I am cleaning the carb set on my '81 SH. How can I remove the two scres holding the throttle butterfly valve in place. I can't get them to budge and the bung up pretty easily. I think my carbs need an extended soak, and I want all the little rubber bits removed (for re-use). Any ideas?

There was some info on this someplace check the tips section or do a search on yahoo groups archive for butterfly. I think guys were heating them slightly with a propane torch, but then had to get new ones since the heads got messed up. I am only going on memory here so look for yourself and see what you find.

The screws are loc-tited in place. Will acetone soften loc tite? It will eat the shaft seals, so be careful.

I believe these screws are either loc-tited in place or the back side is peened over. Either way, removal is difficult, but not impossible. I got most of mine out with just a standard #2 philips driver and liberal amounts of cursing. 2 of them I had to use a handheld impact driver on, the kind you smack with a hammer. If you have to resort to this, MAKE SURE you brace the thottle shaft with something thru the throat of the carb to avoid bending the shaft. And make sure you use loc-tite when you put them back together as I am sure you can imagine the consequences of having one of them come out while the engine is running.

OR... just leave the throttle plates installed and use the rubber-friendly dip solution OR...do a spray clean and blast the crud out of the passages if you can.
