The horn, she no worky......

Gents,
I replaced the original horns with the ones that come in the Vetter Fairing. When I sit at idle, they no worky. But, of course, as I ride, they sound just fine. And...yes its a BRAND NEW, fully charged battery. All the connections are clean and neat. Any suggestions?

I'm not a fairing guy, but I'll take a stab. I'm guessing that the fairing is new to the bike, and there were no horn related or otherwise electrical probs prior. Weak charging system, regulator/recifier going out, or just too much extra draw on the system with the radio, extra lights, etc. Not enough juice flowing at idle, but kick up the RPMs a little and the system puts out more. I'm sure the fairing guys can correct me if I'm wrong and supply some experience based knowledge.

Horns draw a lot of current. More than most lights. Try running a seperate lead for the horn, bypassing the fairing's multi-pin connector.

From day one my horn hasn't worked. Every 6 months or so it will give a feeble ½beep then nothing. Not really an issue for me.

I and many others here have installed car horns on our bikes. It's easy to do and the only thing extra to install is a horn relay. The job should only take about an horn, including the time it takes to remove and reinstall the tank. If you're interested, I'll describe the install to you. I believe there are detailed instructions on this site. Just look around in the tech tips, or mods sections.

The stock horns have an adjuster, a funny looking screw near the side of the horn with a lock nut on it. Other horns should be run through a relay with 10 or 12 guage wiring

Hey there XsiveForce,

As per already suggested, run a separate tap from the fuse block as the main power for the horns, the power side of the relay! And then ground the horn to the frame. You can use the positive horn wire for the positive switch side of the relay, and the ground side of the switch connects to the wire that goes to the horn switch on the handlebar. The regular horn circuit runs power thru the horn, and then grounds at the switch, but it's not a very large power line, and the ground at the switch may also not provide a good contact for good flow of the power needed to make a horn really blast! HTH.
