What's the difference which way the knob 'dresses' as long as it actuates the choke rod??

      "dresses right/dresses left"...????

is this 'model dependent'? Standard vs. Special ?

      ...or is it 'year dependent'?

...surely after 27 yrs I can not be the 1st person to raise this question... (?)

...anyway, my machinist is currently fabricating 6 pieces for me... I figure if *I* have 2 sets of carbs with broken choke levers I can NOT be alone... (?)

        Hey there Uncle Spot,

Well, according to the Yamaha Parts Catalog, from 78-80 the Standards dressed "right/center", while the Specials dressed "Left", but in 81, both Standards and Specials dressed "left"!?!? Not sure why they used different shapes, haven't looked closely at my Special to see if it was something with the Octopus?

This is according to the diagrams on their web site!! YMMV.
