    What did I get?

I got a Standard tank off e-bay to put on Crunchbird. It's a beauty! but it is pure black. Was this a color? The bike was probably a 79 Standard.
I also got the front wheel which I hope is straight, not wavy like I am used to.
Well one thing led to another, I got the rear wheel, it is 17" which fits the standard deal, but I also got the motor, which is 3J6-001733 an SG. What is weird is that it has the shaft for the kickstarter, but my trusty 3J6-010505 doesn't. Is the low serial number an overrun 79 engine? I know it probably doesn't matter.

p.s. I trucked on up to Kennewick to get the stuff, and there were no brake parts left. No caliper, no MC, sorry to the fellows that were looking. I got the discs, though.

I have learned not to be surpised what '80 XS might have. It seems that Yamaha really only built three years of XSs (in the US). '78, '79, and '81. '80s are anything in between '79 and '81.

You know, it is possible to install the kick start pieces into a newer engine .I happen to have all of the kickstart hardware to install into my bike if I want, but with 10:1 compression, I don't think I'd want to try kicking this thing over.

I have played with the kick starter on my XS and realized why they discontinued it.

The main reason one would kick start an XS, is if the battery does not have enough charge to crank the motor. I found that once the motor fires up the head light comes on, sucking current and killing the motor. I had to pull the head light fuse to get the motor stay running and sneak home without a head light.

Was black an original color? The tank doesn't look 25 years old.

Not for any Standard I am aware of.

Thanks. Probably repainted, to match the free fairing the breaker threw in. It's a yamaha in great shape, black with gold around the headlight. I'm not sure what to do with it-or the motor either!-just wanted to save them. All in all, for $145, I got two wheels, good rear tire, three discs, perfect standard tank, good motor, and a box of thisnthat. And the stock fairing. It was worth the trip!

                Need petcocks for the standard.

According to this web site and others, there were no original black stadard models for the 80 either. However, that is the color of mine as well. Not only that, a PO painted the engine all black as well.

As far as I know. The closest XS color to black would be the Black/Gold which was available on the 79 model. Looks black till ya get up close then ya see small gold metalic flake. That was the color of MIYAMI before I got her repainted.

Right, my XS500E has that color, it has a funny name I can't remember like Starry Black or some such.

This bertha is just plain black.
