  • 4RO ignition unit for 81 special

Starting a new search for the 4RO box. I'm still looking.

Since you are now looking for another ignition box I am assuming you are not satisfied with the 1981 Yamaha xs11 ignition box I sent you. Please send it back to me and I will refund you. I am suprised that it did not work as I used it for many years on a 81 xs11 special as its TCI. It ran fine. Shipping must have damaged it is some way. Assume you still have my address. Andreas

I am probably wrong about this, but if there are certain rpms that you are having troubles with, I don't think it is the pick-up unit or the box. If the 4RO box is functional, it should work at any rpm, I think, unlike the older units.

        2H7 vs 4R0

I recently went through this with btdtdan's 81 SH. He had it in an indy shop for a while, and they couldn't figure why it wouldn't accelerate past 5k. They tried changing the jets, and checked the base timing, but didn't check the total timing advance. I went to the shop and checked it out, it had a 2h7 box on it. Dan located a 4R0 box and that cured the problem. He says it runs like a bat out of hell now. Seems the 4R0 box advances the timing electronically, whereas the bikes using the 2H7 do it mechanically.

          Hey Andreas,

I believe your box is still working, but since these are RARE boxes, he was NOW looking for a spare box. I have my spare for my 81, but want to keep it incase of failure of my OEM! So...if you have another 81 box, he would probably be interested in acquiring that one as well!

            Actually, T.C. don't I have your spare?

I'll ship it out as soon as I get home, Monday 11/1.

            Thanks again,

            Randy

The one you sent me is not for an 81. I have an original 81 special I bought new with a perfectly good 4RO box. I removed the covers from both of them and they are not the same. I'm keeping the one I got from you because in a worst case situation I can convert mine over to the early style that has the mechanical advancer and use yours. I'm still looking for a 4RO and yes I have your address.

So, Dan, were you able to see the difference in the pin configurations between the two types of boxes?

                    You can see the difference

Each board has a different pin layout. I'm tired of dealing with this matter. I bought two early boxes and the centrifugal unit for both here locally for less than I paid for my FIRST SPARE. I hope to find a spare 4RO, but they must be more rare than a broke Republican, so I'm not holding my breath till I find one. Thank's for the help. When I die,my daughter will have a heck of a time selling all this crapola on E-Bay, not to mention all my car part's. Dan H.
