  • compression question

    I bought a very negelcted 80G
for parts, the motor has compression of
    100-110-90-100
has 44 thousand miles on it
i slapped a set of carbs on it that i had for spares
it started right up and idled fine
can't take it down the road, as the condition of the bike isn't very good,
any opinions on the life left in the motor

Willy, did you check the compression with the engine warm?

If you are interested in using this engine, get it running and let it come back to life for a few hundred miles. Like the previous suggestion, get it to operating temperature to do a compression test. Also, hole the throttle open while doing the test. That low value has a chance of coming up.

did the test warm, full throttle
then sprayed some oil inside and the compression went up 10-15 lbs
the engine would be more of a spare for me
no plans to use it in the near future

If the compression only went up 10-15 lbs with a shot of oil, sounds like rings AND valves have seen better days. Good candidate for a re-build.

When I shimmed the valves on my F, my compression jumped from the range you have to 137psi. It sounds like it would be worth doing some tinkering on this winter.
