  • 1.5 more things to think about when Buying Used..

Check the integrity of commonly used fasteners and plugs before making an offer. Rounded bolt heads and stripped threads are dangerous and can be expensive to fix. Figure these costs into your offer.

SubTip: Trust your gut and be at least a little bit skeptical (not paranoid) of the sellers claims.

Unfortunately, I just found this out the hard way. It's been only a few days since puchasing an 82 XJ1100 and just found that the oil pan drain plug is mostly stripped. I say mostly stripped because the plug is still in the hole and has a little bit of resistance when turned. It's dripping about 1 tsp. of oil / 24 hrs.
The seller, said he changed the oil at the beginning of the year - so if this is true, he must have been aware that he stripped the plug.

Anyone have thoughts on an inexpensive yet secure fix that a technical novice could handle?

It may be mostly not stripped either. The parts fiche at Yamaha shows a gasket on the drain plug. It might be worn or even missing completely. The only way to find out if the plug is striped or simply missing the gasket is to remove the drain plug and check it. If it's just the drain plug, any auto supply store should be able to provide one that is "close enough" to work. Or, check the dealer.

If it is stripped, chances are it's not the plug but the sump cover that it is threaded into. This is removable, 10-15 bolts or so. Not sure what the best option is for you at this point. You could put a helicoil thread repair insert in it. Or, you could drill and retap to the next larger size bolt. It's not as serious a problem as you might think.

Or buy an oil pan off ebay for $5 or $10 and replace it.

It's official - the drain plug is stripped.

        nashville_bill, I like your suggestion!

Anyone have an oilpan for an 82 XJ1100 available?

The Yamaha Part # is 10M-13417-00-00. Seems to be specific to the XJ1100 as the oil pan part # for the 81 XS1100 is different.
