Whatever it is, it has been modified or hacked.

I bought a nice stock pan with a duct tape cover and had it redone. It wasn't cheap, but I am very happy with the result.

Marty, the seat in the pic looks great! I like the pattern in the covering.

The seat was done by SARGENT CYCLE PRODUCTS. The cover is what they call GRIPTEX. It is very comfortable IMHO.

Okay, here is the underside of the seat.

The main problem is that the seat unlatches from under the tank when I acelerate. It doesn't seem to fit that way very well.

What do you guys think? Does it still look like a 79sf seat?

Would this grab bar fit? Looks way different and longer than the other grab bar I have.

            Anybody identify my seat yet?

I wonder if this one would work (probably not)....

My best guess says that if it is what he says it is, it won't fit your bike.

Grab rail or seat? Which were you referring to, both?

There was no XS1100 Special in 1978. I'd play it safe. Both won't fit. Be patient. The correct seat and grab rail will turn up sooner or later.

Looks to me like it is indeed from a 1980g standard. Question is, would it swap?

The side covers on '79s are differnts than the '80s. The seat pan fills that gap. The experiment will cost you $. The '79 Special seat pan will fit your bike, no question. How hard have you looked for one? I have no doubt you can obtain one if you look in the right place. EBay is not the only source. There are bike breakers all over the country.

I went to the Yamaha web site and looked at the illustrated parts breakdown. I didn't find the grab rail.

I bought a luggage rack for an '80 standard and tried it on my '80 Special. It didn't fit.

It's a "crap shoot" at best.

I don't recall ever seeing panels for a 79sf. Neither have I seen a grab rail or much of anything else.

                              I guess I'll ride it ugly. :-(

Maybe I should swap engines into my 80g. Then I don't have to worry about crappy 79sf front brake calipers/pads, small gas tank, no side panels, etc.

But an engine swap won't really work because I don't want a 4-2 exhaust, either.

I'll hold off I guess until I find some 79sf parts.

In the meantime, would anyone mind posting close up pics of your genuine 79sf side panels and/or grab bar?

I want to know what the 79sf side panels look like. There is a possibility I could spot a mislabeled pair down the road, since people get the year and std/spcl models mixed up.
