  • 1982 XJ1100 Fluids

This is my first post to this message group - Greetings!

I'm purchasing an 82 XJ1100 tomorrow and the first thing I would like to do is start out with fresh engine and drive fluids. Unfortunately, the service manual won't arrive for a few more days so am wondering if anyone knows what drive fluids the manufacturer recommends.

    Thank You

The recommend fluids (20 years ago) were 80w90 gear oil, but nowadays the synthetic stuff works really well in the middle and final drives. Don't use syn engine oil. The capacities are 10oz per unit, but I have never been able to get the final drive to take more than 6oz. Engine oil is recommended 20w-40, but that is hard to find, so 20w50 Casterol works well. Some guys prefer Rotella. Which ever tastes best, I reckon. If you go looking for the drain for the middle drive, it is located on the bottom, center of the engine, in the rear, right above the pivot point for the center stand. It should be a 17mm hex head. It will be the only large hex head in that area.
