  • all spoons no forks

fork oil leak. great. i grab the fork seals and some heavy fork oil and start pulling things apart. first of all, the tops of the tubes are totally different from the yamaha manual. then i go and twist that stubborn allen bolt in the bottom and strip it out.

anyone have a fork tube... haha.

    "gosh darn" it.

      Hey Jon,

Are you sure you stripped the allen bolt on the bottom?? Are you not able to get it to come out/loose?? If so, then it's probably not stripped, just that the inner damper tube that it bolts/screws into is now spinning, you have to secure it from the top/inside of the tube with a very long wrench with a modified bolt head on the end, or a piece of wood....watch for splinters!!!! Check out the tech tips on Fork repairs and such!

Another trick is to use an air wrench, can spin faster to get the bolt out before the inner part spins!

Air wrench (don't even need an impact wrench) works *wonderfully*. I've changed fork seals once without an air wrench and a few times with...it makes life *soooo* much easier.

When I did mine, I remmovered the allen bolt before removing the top nut thus keeping spring pressure on the assembly. Make SURE to use Lock-tite on the threads of the Allen blot when you go to assemlbe. One thing that made removing and installing the seals easier was to heat the lower fork tubes in very hot (boiling ) water for a little bit. Aluminuim expands quickly & makes getting the old seal out easy & puuting the new one in easy.
