  • Rear wheel bearings and seals from Bikebandit

    I went to the bike shop to get a new rear tire installed. The mechanic had a tuff time getting the axle out. The bearings in the wheel are turning sort of rough and told me they need to be replaced. I felt the bearings myself and they don't seem to be rolling real smooth.

    A couple of sites show they have the bearings and seals. Xtreme powersports and Bike bandit show they have them. Bike Bandit had the better prices. I know they can ship slow because I have bought items in the past from them. Do you think I should have any problems getting them or problems matching them in? I have read quite a few threads here of people sying that the bearings are hard to find.

    Bike Bandit usually ships via USPS priorty mail. It shouldn't take too long. I have good luck dealing with them. If you can remove them, then take them to a bearing supply store and see if they can match them.

      If you can knock the bearings out yourself, then take them to a bearing dealer and have them match them up for you. Odds are, they will be able to match up the seals too.

        Remember to place the bearing spacer back in the hub between the bearings, and smear some grease on the axle before you put it back in.

          Thumper those must be the OEM bearings. I have looked up and down. Took Partsnmore last bearing for the front and still need other side. Dealer and OEM want 14.99 for one side and 34.50 for the other side, pluse 6.99 a seal!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thats kind of crazy. Front one i bought from parts and more was 9.99 with seal.
          JCW doesn't have emm, Dennis kirk doesn;t have emm, partsnmore out, bike bandit has OEM and cost like i said above.
          Any other cheaper options or site recommendations would be cool.

          If anyone has a left side cover for an 80G that mounts with holes, i will pay emm very well.

            My bike is stripped and painted. Thought since i have everything apart that i might replace the bearings. Don't know how much life or what condition the bearings are currently in. I haven't taken of the seals yet, and if i do, i'll need new ones. Bike ran fine before i stripped it and prob doesn't need bearings. Looks like i'll be into bearings and seals $70. Think i'll save the cash for now and wait for a better deal.

              At that price I would too. I bought my front wheel bearings at Meguire Bearing in Portland, OR. The were able to match up one of the seals but the one that goes around the speedo drive was a dealer only item.

              None of the rear wheels I have need bearings so I can't say for sure if McGuire would have them. However they have come through for me many times.

                The left side needle bearing is a yamaha only item, that's why Bike bandit can get it. The other three bearings are over-the counter items available at any good bearing supply house.

                  Randy my wheels seem tight. Is it even worth taking the seals out to inspect emm? If they were gone or going out i would notice. Had the bike up to 120mph before i stripped it, and it handled like i was going 80. Think i'm being picky about everything. I have put alot of money and time in the bike. I stold the bike with excellent compression for $500. Up to now i'm it it $1800 with paint, new parts, and a custom seat.

                  Oh, still need a left side cover for an 80G, hehe

                    I don't think you need to pull the seals to check the bearings. Just removing the wheel and feeling the racers inside and checking if they roll smoothly. If not, it may be time to change them.

                    Also, if it is very difficult to pull out the rear axle bolt, it may be sticking to the racers as well.

                    I too bought my bike at not a steal but a fair price. I know I have put at least $1800 into it in repairs and restoration. But this is my hobby and my fun. I enjoy riding my XS and that is the whole point of it. At least to me.

                      What happens when your bearing fails?

                      I replaced the bearings on my 78 and 79 and I went to yamaha to get the parts. Although $70 may seem high I felt is was cheap insurance based on the impact that bearing failure can have on your day. The main reason for pulling the bearings was not so much the bearing as the grease, the grease will not last 20 years, and when it goes the bearing can go bad quickly. For what it is worth the some of the bearings I took out had brinelling damage and rust marks and I felt I had made the right decision. If you have the bearing out, clean it out with a degreaser, dry it out and then repack the bearing before you put it back in.
