  • Intermediate drive fluid level

I am new to this forum and just purchased my XS1100 this week. It is a 78' standard and I do not have a manual yet. What type of fluid do I use in the intermediate drive and what is the procedure for checking fluid level.

Use transmission fluid. The thick gooey stuff.
Check out the tech tips section, there's a diagram of a thingie you can measure your oil level with.
Don't forget the final drive. Middle and final drive have seperate oil compartments. The shaft itself is dry (OK, some grease has to be there, not too much tho). Get a liter of transmission fluid. More than enuff. (for both ends).

      Re: Intermediate drive fluid level

The middle drive oil should be Hypoid 90W, or I use Synthetic 80W-120 oil. Same thing for the final drive oil. You need a dip stick(s) for proper oil level and the bike should be either on the center stand, or someone should hole the bike vertical.

Welcome excess11. Did you look under your seat for the tool kit? The white plastic thingie is your gage. It measures from the filler surfaces.

Lacking the plastic gage, the middle gear oil level is 2 5/8" deep, the final drive level is 1" deep.

Lacking a measurement method, drain them both; add 12 ounces to the middle (375 cc) and 10 ounces to the final (300 cc).
If you don't know the history, I would drain them before going too far.

          I use 80W-90 GL-4 hypoid.
