The 4RO will be embossed into the cover. Look at one the 2H7's that you have. See where the 2H7 is near the middle of the cover? That is where the 4RO should be. The should be a p/n somewhere else on the cover that will have that number. I believe it is the Hitachi number.
On my spare 2h7 box the is a number right below where it says ignition unit. It says type TID14-01 . Maybe that is the correct box, but we would need an 81 owner to check his and chime in. Where did you find it?
I checked mine and it has TID14-04 at the top and just below that is 4RO-10. On the bottom right is 005.The 005 looks like the numbers were stamped or embossed into what appears to be shiny metal affixed to the plastic case of the unit. Hitachi is molded into the plastic case. I know mine is the correct unit because I bought the bike new and it has never been replaced.

This may need to be posted with the what to look for in a used bike. Especially for an 81 special If it has been messed with by someone trying to make it run. CHECK the ECI box to make sure it has the correct unit installed ie The 4RO unit. The 2H7 will let it run but poorly.
Thanks to John for your knowledge, sharp mind and willinginess to help . Also to TC for your most generous offer and finally to Sam who lives down the road, for having Uncle Sam make a late night delivery of the 4RO.
Now all I need to do is make up my feeble mind which one of these bikes to sell. Three is more than enough for anyone.
Thanks again to all that offered help and opinions.

Dan, I see you found a box locally. I'm glad you didn't have to pay the outragous price that you were quoted by that 'other' guy. Channelview is just down the road, but it sure is a good ways down that road. Have you installed it yet? How does it run? Watch those leaky carb gaskets. Maybe the 81 is the one to sell, so you won't have so many problems down the road, with a bike that has so many unique, hard to find parts. Your 80SG is beautiful, (8,500 original miles) and the 78 runs like a scalded ass ape. That's all you need.
Hey John,
Yes it is installed and unless I can ride both this 81 and the 78 at the same time I don't know which one would be the fastest. Come down and check it out This old 81 will Honk. I now have the Vetter sidecar on the 80 and it still will run pretty darn quick. Think I'll put that 4 into 1 on it. Thanks again for checking out the 81 and finding the problem. I think it is now issue free and ready for a new home. To many bikes and too little time.

Dan, that 80 is so nice that I wouldn't put the 4-1 on it. Keep it stock, and quiet. Remember, Agnelina will be in there, plus, doesn't the 4-1 mount to the right side, and would the sidecar mount interfere with it?
I hope Ricky didn't hose you too bad on his labor costs, especially since he couldn't figure out the problem.
I may try to get by one day next week, but right now I'm laid up with a severe muscle strain of the right calf muscle, and I'm on crutches. Kinda hard to ride and carry crutches around. Hell, they won't even fit in my car.
Okay boys, who is going to help me out? I bought myself a spare unit for my 81 special and it came yesterday. And guess what, it has no attached/ glued on tab with the identifying part numbers like my original unit. It looks like the original, except the word Ignition Unit and Hitachi are backwards to what the original is. Basically, I haven't a clue. Is there any way to identify one of these things without a number. I hate it when this sort of thing happens to me.

Yes, Dan, there is a way to know. Open the cover (six small screws) and take a look at the pc board. The 81 and up box has an integrated circuit in the center of the board. You'll be looking at the solder side of the board, so it looks like two parrallel rows of pins right down the middle of the board lengthwise. IIRC, it is 16 pins.
The earlier models don't have this. The 81 and up has electronic advance, which is what that IC is for.
Randy you are the man. I always did say you east coast guys were a sharp group no matter what George W. says. I can't thank you enough for your help. I'm gonna take that rascal apart as soon as I hang up. I'll let you know what I find. Thanks. Dan
