  • midle gear seal

Well, stepped in the garage the other day and noticed a puddle of oil under the bike. A quick inspection seems to indicate gear oil from the middle gear unit. Out of the boot actually. Has anyone replaced the seal without pulling the motor as the manual says? Looks as though you can get to it by removing the wheel/swing arm. Any pointers?

That's an easy one. Drain the gear oil, Pull the boot back at the engine side, and unbolt the driveshaft flange. Leave the trans in gear. It helps to hold the flange from turning, then remove the bolt with an open end wrench. Put it in neutral, turn it to the next bolt, put in gear, and repeat. Then just unbolt the middle drive from the engine. On the bottom of the chrome cover there are two bolts. One short, one long. You'll have to pull one to see which it is, but you want to pull the long one. Leave the other two bolts in the chrome cover, but remove all of the others. The middle gear will come right off with a good straight pull. It may need a pry, but it will come. You will need to make a new gasket, or order one with the new seal. That's how I pulled mine.

Be very careful when putting it back together. There is a dowel pin that might go cockeyed on you. I had one come loose as I put mine back together an before I realized it, I broke a bolt flange! I thought mine was leaking by the big Oring. I replaced it, but it still leaks a little. (dammit)
