  • Gas Tank Cap

I have gotten a standard tank for my special (Which I dearly love, but it seems I can't get from here to there without needing to stop for gas. I do get 35-40mpg, I just travel a lot). It was very ceap, but did not come with anything.

I am guessing I can take the petcocks, emblems and sender of the special tank, but the cap is different. I can't find any on ebay or a (short) internet search. Are these things particular to the XS tank? Anyone have one lying around they would be willing to sell or trade?

The Special petcocks will not fit the standard tank. The are different sizes. There is no way they will fit. I had a Stadard parts bike, and I sold the petcocks, and that's when I saw thw differece. The caps, and senders will not interchage, either
    Bummer, huh?

I'm having a different gas cap problem. I have 2 of these tanks for my 2 XS11s but no keys. The local locksmith wants 25 bucks per to open them. Anybody know any tricks for popping these open without a key?

Once open, I'll disassemble the locks and remove the tumbles so any Yamaha key will open them. One of these is the big touring tank and I’m really looking forward to mounting it on the Mongrel and loosing the tiny special tank.

        Hey there Geezer,

I remember someone posting about this. The latch is a very simple spring loaded "L or J" shaped catch, that holds onto the outside rim of the tank on the front edge closest to the bars. Folks said take a thin but stiff wire with a bit of a point, and have it bent to fit under the front edge, then while pushing downward a little on the cap to release the tension, you fish the hook under so that it catches that spring latch, and you pull on it to pull it away from the lip, and then the cap should be able to open, as long as that catch is held away from the tank lip! HTH.

Thanx, I'll give it a try. I'm way over due to put a bigger tank on the Mongrel.
