  • petcock screens missing

I'm getting ready to paint my tank. When taking the petcocks off i found that neither one had a screen on them. Prob the reason why my carbs were so dirty. Was wondering if i just use an inline filter, would everything be alright besides the reserve? And does the screen really catch alot of debri or rust? How often would the in-line filters need to be replaced if there is no screen.

Filters are a good idea. When my wife bought her FJ1100, it had a problem with the Kreem tank liner detaching from the top of the tank and setteling on top of the petcock, blocking the fuel flow. After removing the petcock, (it only has one) I discovered that it was missing the screen tower. I tried to get a new one but my local rip off dealer said they were discontinued, and if he could find one, it would cost over $80. Inside the body of the petcock was a sort of well, so what I did was to get some fine, stainless steel wool, and pack it into the well area. There is an inline filter also, and we've had no trouble with it in over 9 years.

      in the tank?

      Hi Griff,
betcha those screens are floating around inside the tank someplace?
Best you find & replace them to protect the petcocks themselves from fuel-borne crud. 2-part epoxy will hold them in. Downstream filters should be an addition rather than a substitution.
Another thing to think about is cleaning out the tank before you paint it.

        John,
It would be just a little piece of steel wool? The problem is how do you keep it intact, and from getting loose and sloshing around in the tank?

No screens in the tank. I used a chemical we use at work, cleaned the tank pretty good. Was thinking of plumbing a couple of stubs from the petcock. Looks like theres 2 orfices diff. sizes.
This would keep me from sucking the bottom of the tank. What ya think?Inline filters, stubs, and a full tank no reserver?

How about replacing the petcocks? It might cost a few bucks, but will save headaches.

I don't know how it stayed in the petcock well. It was crammed in as tight as I could pack it. I don't really know if it stayed in or not, but there has been no problems with trash in the carbs in the 9 years since I went through them. The PO had let it sit for a few years and... so on and so forth.

They still have screens for these things?

That screen does two things, 1) filter large particles out of fuel, 2) if you look at it the front side of the screen goes top to bottom, the back side is screen only on the top so that it will not pick up from the exstream back of the tank so it wont suck up the crud back there.
I kreamed my tank many years ago and have not had any of it come loose and I run two small cone shaped inline fuel filters. I change the filters once a year on my P/M.
There's always a way, figure it out.

I am also missing the tubes and screen on one of my petcocks.. I have seen them on ebay on the petcocks but they seem to go to high or I am too late. Eventually I will catch one.

I did put inline fuel filters though to keep the carbs clean.

If the screens from an XJ will work, I should have a couple of extras from my original wrecked tank.

The XJ and the Special petcocks will interchange, but the Standard is different from them.

hey guys the screens serve 2 purposes
                              1 stops crud
2 makes the difference between on and reserve
if you look at the screens, it is actually 2 screens
1 goes up about 1 1/2 solid with no screen, thats the normal on

the other is all screen, that is the reserve screen,

so when there is 2 inches of gas in the tank, the screen that has the solid part at the bottom, can not get any more gas

then you switch to reserve and the other side of the screen takes over and sucks the tank dry

you can go with inline filters, but the crud will get into your petcocks and muck them up, also you will loose the reserve
so when you run out, you are walking
