    Tip on shipping a fairing

I sent an XS fairing from Olympia Washington it Bozeman Montana for $29. When I took it into UPS, they quoted me $130. The problem is that the closest box they have puts it into the 75 lb class. I found that by making my own box, I was able to keep the fairing in the 35lb class. All it take is a box knife, a hot glue gun and a 4' straight edge.

I dug up some heavy boxes and used 3 boxes to make one. It took me a couple of hours but worth the effort. I reenforced the areas that I was concerned about.

I removed the windscreen and mounting hardware. It all fit in 1 box.

I used the UPS site to calulate the dimensions needed to keep the price down.

I bought a set of these off of someone on Ebay and I can't figuire out the mount points. I can figuire out mostly how they go together but how does it bolt on to the frame?

        Hey ThumperJSA,

I don't have a set, but from what I've seen, most of them mount using the Upper Shock bolt, and then the lower footpeg mounting bracket somehow, and perhaps, the rear fender bolt mounts.

I'm going to be working on MAKING a set of customized hard bags and mounting hardware for mine, using a pair of those nice bright aluminum Diamond Plate Toolboxes. I've got to cut them down a bit, they are 24" long, I only have room for about 16-18" of length! The have a nice inner lip that fits under the lid to keep out rain, and this set has separate hinges, NOT THE LONG PIANO style hinge along the length, so I just have to remove them from the side, and remount them on what will be the front/leading edge of the bag....the actual side of the toolbox, and then get a set of flush mounting/key set locks instead of the draw pull clasp they now have. I'll be taking photos and such, and will post the process when I'm done. I should be able to make the set for about $150.00 plus labor(cheap....my own!)

Thanx for the info TC. Your info plus the fact I found a pic of how to setup the frame of the bag helped alot.

Now that I got the frame together and wrestled it on, I ran into on more problem. Either I have to relocate the rear turn signals or something because the location I currently have them won't let the tops on.

Any idea as to where to put them?

Meanwhile, I am going to see if I can find some pictures on the site or ebay that hopefully might help.

            blinker mount

Hey Thump,, is your mounting bracket large and square at end??? My 78/79 bracket is large and incorporates the blinker ,,,my 81 bracket is small and narrows to bolt on bracket (future delima of blinker mounts) , but am sure that theres a way. Po had the bags mounted and was street leagal, just have wanted to put them on yet.

Mine are the same that Steve was trying to sell on page one of this thread. There are no blinkers tied into.

So here is what I decided to do. I drilled to holes in the tail light bracket and mounted them there. If I don't like it, I'll pick up another tail light bracket on Ebay I guess. I'll take a pic and display it later.

I had a tough enough time sanding these down to repaint them. I was not going to give up that easily. 4 hours of sanding, 3 coats of rusto paint with some light sanding in between. Not a perfect job, but adequate for me.
