  • Looking for charge

One moment everything on my XS11SG was fine & the next the tach quits, the headlight don't get brighter when the motor is revved and the voltage at the battery don't increase neither.
The stator resistances and the diode checks all read right on the book and I have pulled apart every connector on the harness that I could find then cleaned & dielectric greased each terminal.
All to no avail. As all the parts check out OK I have no idea what can have gone wrong. Could someone please suggest a next step in trouble shooting?

Fred, have you checked the voltage regulator under the seat?

      reg-rect

      Hi John,
finned aluminum thingie with 3 whites a red and a black going to a 5-pin and also a green and a tan going to a 2-pin? That's what you do the diode check on, right? You betcha! Checks out just fine. I even swapped it for another one that also checked out fine, no difference. I'm sure it's something really stupid, I just don't know what.

        Did you mention fuses?

Check to see if you have magnetic field at the right engine casing. Use a steel feeler gage with the key on to test it. If there is no field, the regulator may be shot, or the field coil is not working for some other reason. I had one that had lead wires shorted against the inside of the casing. Be sure that you remove the stator BEFORE you attempt to remove the field coil, if that is the direction you eventually take...and be careful with that delicate stator! I would test the field coil with a meter before you do all of that. I believe that if you remove the connectors, you could test it for ohms and check for shorts to ground, and even hook it up to a 9-volt battery to see if it creates a magnetic field.
