  • XJ1100 Black hole

    Hi,

I recently bought a used 82 XJ - great shape, decent price, runs great, needs tranny work... stuck in gear.

(I love this bike even though I haven't ridden it yet... if feels a lot lighter than my 79 XS Special, it feels much lower to the ground, the adjustable handlebars are awsome.)

    The black hole....
On the right side of the bike below the side cover there is what appears to be a toolbox without a cover. I know there was some sort of lockable "wimpy-lock-your-bike" chain thingy there. Being a purist at heart... I've seached the internet for reference pictures as to what was there on the original bike. I can't find any pictures resolute enough to show the detail (when enlarged all you can see is a black hole with a couple of chain links).

Can anyone send me detailed high resolution pictures of that area so I can see what was origionally there?

I do not have an owners manual. I do have a parts manual and a sevice manual though (the pictures are awful.)

Is that empty the tool box or was it for the stupid chain?

    thanx,
    Lori

    The Black Box/hole!

    Hey there Lori,

And welcome! I have to ask, are you female, not sure because of your last name.....Eastern Europe?, could be acceptable male name in your language??

In the links section, you'll find a reference to a PDF manual for the 81H/SH series, on page 12 of the PDF document, which is page 20 of the owner's manual, there is a picture showing the wimpy chain in a plastic soft sleeve and the lock, and that's it, no cover, nothing! It's probably the same for the XJ!

      XJ chain thingy

Yes, it's the same on the XJ... If I knew how to post a photo I'd send you one but all it is is a helmet lock chain.

        XJ 1100 Black Hole

        Thanx for the info.
It helped some, the pictures are still too un-resolute (crappy) to see what I'm looking for.

Am I female? Does it matter?

A picture says a thousand words!

          XJ1100 Black Hole

          Hi again,

Here is what I am talking about...

Is the upper red arrow pointing to an empty tool box?

What is that nub thingy that the lower red arrow is pointing to?

          Thanx,

          Lori

Hey, I had the same question about the second red arrow! My 81 xs11h, I guess (standard) has it too.

I think your thousand-word picture only made the water more muddy (at least for me), but facinating none the less! I'm sure you could say another thousand and I don't know if it would help me. (I hope it was okay for me to respond, not a rhetorical picture...)

              That nob thing

That nob thingy is actualy to lock the helmet-chain on. When the helmet-chain is unlocked you just put it in the black hole, (first red arrow) and lock it to the nub thing (second arrow). Then you have to use the key to get it off.

I actual have that helmet-chainlock to my xj11 maxim. Nice gadget i think

                Yamaha Black Hole

Thanx for the info... that clears it up (I can now take off the bracket with the nub thingy and also the empty black box)

I wonder where the tool box is if it has one? I looked under the seat... no joy!
                Thanx,

Tool kit would be under the seat in the plastic "pocket" nder the seat. Front snaps open to reveal the kit in a vinyl pouch, held in place by a strap.

Lori, look under the very rear of the seat, right below the backrest bar and in front of the license plate holder. The toolbox will be a sorta wedge-shaped plastic compartment with a curved lid that opens at the front. If yours is missing, and you want to replace it, let me know. I have a parts XJ that still has the box. And yes, I've wondered about that little box down on the right side. It would seem to need a lid to keep that chain inside, but neither of my XJ's has one. Personally, I would hate have that thing fall out and drag aound while I'm riding along! I do have the chain for mine, but I don't have a key to fit it, so I just unbolted that "stud" that it connects to and replaced the bolt. AFAIK, that chain was for locking the bike to a post or something as an anti-theft device. I can't imagine using it for a helmet lock. There is a loop for that purpose under the right side of the seat at the seat latch.

My '83 XS650SK has the silly chain you speak of. It's supposed to be a security chain. I've had the bike for 21 years and never used it. The box my be full of rust flakes now for all I know. I think the chain could be cut with side cutters or broken with a good hard pull. Not much of a deterrent.

                          Hi Lori,
                          You and Michelle Duff eh?
Hey! Californians get 7 letters on a bike plate?
I'm OK with my XS bike plate but all the Sakatchewan bikers who are stuck with TRIUM or NORTO or YAMAH for vanity plates because we are limited to 5 letters are truly envious of you. If there is a Scott owner in the Province at all I bet he's been pre-empted by someone with that name who has plated his Harley with it.
As to your gender, all are welcome. It's not that it matters, it's that female XS11/XJ11 riders are in such a small minority that a feminine-sounding name on a post tends to spark curiosity and XS11/XJ11 riders who have chosen to be female whether with surgical help or by simple declaration are a minority of that minority. A similar effect is found by Laurie Mills of the XS650 list who tends to insert (I am still a guy) into his signature.
