  • Pickup Resistance value?

Does anyone have the values for resistance on the pickups for an XJ?

How would I test the pickups with a multimeter...does the resistance change as the rotor passes over it? Can I tell whether the pickups are working? Are they available from a dealer?

    Thanks again guys!

    Is this within tolerances?

I'm getting 9 Ohms resistance across each coil, and zero resistance across the common wires. (I'm sorry I don't know what color the wires are...they've been rewired by the PO)

I just checked this on my XJ. According to the manual, you should remove the small plug from the ignition box and check across the terminals there. If you had the original color wires, you would test across the orange and black (common), and the grey and black. According to my service manual, the resistance at this point should be 120 ohm +/- 10% @ 68 degrees. Mine actually read 121.5 ohm @ about 85-90 Degrees. You do NOT make the test while cranking, so the rotor is irrelevant. Your reading is way low. I'd look the wiring over from the pick-ups to the plug at the ignition box. Assuming the re-wiring wasn't botched somehow, it sounds like your coils may be bad, but I would put my money on wiring issues. You did unplug the coils from the ignition box before taking the reading? Otherwise your reading the resistance of the circuitry inside the box as well.

        Hey there Hepcat,

You'll definitely want to trace those wires down, and ensure that they are isolated, testing 1 wire and the other lead to the frame to ensure you're NOT getting a ground/short. The wires are a closed circuit with the ignitor box. Each PU coil is a separate circuit, so the commons should NOT be joined to each other! You may have to find where they were spliced, and remove/seperate the splice, and then retest the remaining wires to the coils.

Then, if you get the proper readings, then you know the wiring the PO did was messed up, and just run some new wires!

If you get bad readings, the assembly was still available, at least the XS was, kinda pricey though! Might be able to find some used ones, "Chevy" has lots of XJ parts!

        Good Luck!

Actually, TC the common (black) wires DO join together in the plug at the ignitior box on the XJ. It's shown that way on the schematic in the service manual I have, and in fact it is that way on my XJ.
