    Hi. I found the [useful] story of the gauge here:http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread.php?threadid=72

    But, to be honest, i'm having trouble making any sense of it. can someone take a pic of one, and then fill in the jpg with some measurements, or else just give me a hint about how to make one with a pencil. I gather that I'm supposed to stick it in to x depth, and at that time, i should get approx y oil in the gause. i just cant determine what the values of x and y are.

        Hey Brock,

        The info is right there in that thread! One end is for one of the chambers, the middle gear, the OTHER end is for the Rear Diff. chamber. The large wide section in the middle of the gauge is the STOP point, where the gauge stops against the top edge of the chamber.....then you look at the part that is sticking down in the chamber, after you pull it out, you see where the oil came to on the stick.

        For the Diff. Rear, 24mm from the top is the HIGH filled point, and 26mm is the LOW fill point.

        For the middle gear, 66mm from the top is the HIGH point, and 69mm is the low point.

        So, you need something that you can stick down into both holes at least 69mm deep, preferably about 75-80mm, and has a flat part sticking out the side to act as a controlled STOP, so you can't stick it down any further. Then inscribe some lines across the thing at 24 &26mm and at 66 & 69mm if you want to use a 1 ended stick only, vs. the dual ended design provided!

          in a pinch

          could probly use one of those machinest rulers you know the kind with the sliding stop on it there about 8 or so inches long.Just in a pinch mind you but it would have mm markings on it.

                Here is the part # for the gauge 2H7-2815A-00-00. $3.65 plus shipping. It is under the category "side cover-tool" in Yama parts.
                This is for a XJ but it looks like the XS takes the same one.

                I ordered my from http://www.highlandsyamaha.com along with some other items "online", and was very happy with the service.

                  thanks for the part number topcat! I don't suppose there's any chance that the entire toolkit has a part number? I'd love to fill that anoying hole in the side of my machine!

                    OK, I'm about to look pretty stupid here, but i didnt even look for the toolkit. is it supposed to be under one of the covers? I only looked under the cover for the fuses, i've never even opened the other one.

                    I'll check when I get home, but i'm gonna feel terrible if i see it there when i open it.

                    another note, i'm supposed to put the thing on the center stand to check oils and things, but i'll be damned if my 170 pound frame is gonna get that 600 pound frame on the stand. anyone have any hints to lean the contest in my favor?

                      The toolkit is under the other cover in a storage nook to the right of the battery. You should need the key to unlock the sidecover.

                      I only weigh 155 but it can be done. The way I do it is standing over the bike, I grab the handlebar with my right hand and and the seat grab rail on the side with my left hand and pull up and back while pushing down on the center stand with my foot. It's pretty easy for me that way. Some people stand to the side of the bike to pull it up on the centerstand but I'm afraid the bike could get away from me too easily that way.

                      On a side note, I've always been amazed at how narrow the range is between full & add on the dipstick.

                        Yes, the entire tool kit have a "part #", but isn't any more available from Yamaha:
                        2H7-28100-00-00 or
                        2H7-28100-10-00

                        nor the "special cable":
                        2H7-2814A-00-00 (wire hook)

                        The only way to get one is "E-Bay"
                        By the way, if somebody have tool kit for my others XS, I'm interested ( XS 250, 650, 750 and TX750 )

                            Hey there Brock,

                            Looks like you need to peruse the Tech Tips section a bit better, there is a tech tip on putting it up on the center stand!

                            As long as you're on a flat surface, and have slightly tilted the bike back and forth to ensure the both prongs of the center stand are in contact, then just standing on the side, holding the front wheel straight with the left hand, and grabbing the underside of the seat rail in your right, and putting you heel on the lever sticking out from the side of the stand, and pushing down with your foot, and pulling up and back with your hand, and it will hop right up on the center stand surprisingly easily. The center stand prongs are rounded to assist in it rolling up on to them!

                              Brock, I don't know if you have an XS or an XJ ( you need to put it in your profile/sig), but on the XJ, the toolkit is in a plastic box at the rear of the seat underneath (between the seat and the fender). It has a curved lid that snaps open.
                              BTW, what the heck IS that wire hook thing for anyway???????
