My XJ1100J gas tank is rusted very badly! I am wondering if any other Yamaha tank will fit on this beast. I think repairing this tank is nearly not an option. Thanks for your help

Hey there KJ,
Well, if the rust isn't coming thru so that it's not actually leaking, then you can clean it up internally and recoat/reline it! I didn't use the stuff folks here have recommended, I got some from the JCW auto catalog designed to seal up car tanks with rust in them, just had to do a rough cleaning to remove the loose flakes, and then poured it in, sloshed it around a bit, and then let it drain, and dry for a few days, then put everything back on, and it's been great for over 3 years now!
I have an XJ tank that I'm going to be putting on my XS this winter. I'll just have to mod the part that is neart the seat. I've been told that my handlebars will probably contact the larger bulbous front of the tank, but I may weld some stops on my frame/triple tree to prevent that, since I don't turn that sharply anyways!!! My bike is an 81 Special. The XJ tank is larger in capacity, so you'll loose that also if you put a Special's tank on there. I suggest cleaning/reline!

My tank, unfortunately, is rusted through on the bottom behind both petcocks and on the outside of the tank. Like I said repair is almost not an option. I believe the special tank is also about an inch shorter in length.Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly

I happen to have an extra tank for an xj1100, no petcocks or gauge sending unit on it but the tank is solid, Got it off of ebay for 60$, my local ones were all junk so i went looking for a new one just to have a second to paint in an airbrush class this fall. check there you may find one i see them regularly under yamah maxim search line. i think a 750 tank will fit with no problems only not a big.DN

Okay folks, let's help XJKraft here,
Not so much with offers of spare XJ tanks, although if you DO have one, that would be great. But with info on possibly repairing what he has.
I had heard that once steel has had fuel in contact with it that you can't weld it, not so much for explosions, but the contamination of the pores of the steel, that it won't seal?? I know I see those guys on the Chopper shows building tanks, but they are from scratch and haven't had fuel in them!
How about an alternative to welding the holes? Can you put a thin piece of sheet metal and glue it with JB WELD or similar product? I haven't used JB Weld, but found this other stuff in a small roll called MegaSteel or some such, you cut off how much you need, then you kneed the two components together, and a chemical/heat reaction takes place, and the stuff hardens, you can mold it and then after hardening it's impervious to fuels, oil. I used it to repair one of my float bowl posts, just ground off the excess with a dremmel afterwards so the bowl would fit, and it's been submerged in gas for over 3 years now, doing fine!

Hey KJKraft,
When you first come/log onto the Forum, you can go to your USERCP (see the tabs at the top of the page?), or check your XS11 symbol above the list of Forums, if it's gold, then it will tell you that you have a new message in your INBOX!!
To Contact someone, click on the PM button in the message next to their ID/name, and you'll be taken to a screen where you can either send a message within this FORUM, or an EMAIL, "IF" they allow email messages to be sent to them, some have blocks!
I put this info here, cause wasn't sure if you knew about the UserCp section and wouldn't have seen it if I had sent YOU a PM!

Well, orange has always been my favorite color. Especially Allis Chalmers Persian #1! I even painted my Samurai in that particular shade. All I want painted orange on the bike tho is the black parts (except the frame). I'd even be willing to sell my tank to him for less, since it needs paint. Then I could buy yours!John
