  • Question about oil, and some more..

Hi, i got so good answers last time i had a question so i try again for some more :-)

First oil in engine for xj11. I have read an article in maintance here that says there is no or little difference in oil for mc and cars. But isn`t there an issue with the clutch that maybe will be slippery when using oil for cars? Have someone here any experience of this? What oil do you all use?

    2. I have an `82 xj11 maxim and do you know howe many HP there is in this bike? This bike is imported from USA five years ago and the registrationpapers says 70HP. I cant find anything about this here in norway, the only thing i find is for `78-`79 xs. The HP in this bikes is 85HP is what i found out.

    3. Do any of you know where i can find owners-manual for this bike? I have an workshop-manual for `78xs, but dont think all is the same for XJ/XS ? I tried yamaha but the bike is to old, they cant deliver any.

    Thanx for answers!!

    Hi lars,
One of the two mechanics I've ever trusted told me once that I shouldn't use car oil unless I have to. And unless someone can prove to me otherwise, I don't mind spending the extra money to make sure my baby stays healthy. I do know that things like synthetic oil and slick 50 will make the clutch slip though. Can't help you much with the specs or manual though. Finding a manual on Ebay seems like the most promising course I know of.

          Ditto.

Castrol GTX 20W50. I've used it in all my bikes since '77. Never had an oil-related problem. Not counting leaks

Good question about the oil seeing as how the 20W40 recommended in the manual appears to be on the endangered species list. Jury is still out on synthetic oils according to everyone I've spoken to recently. Lot's of pro's and cons. Love to hear more on the subject. www.wyomingben.com still has XS11 manuals but no XJ's showing on the website. Still might be worth dropping them a line. They claim that if they don't have it they can get it. Have to credit someone from a recent post here for that link. They're just up the road from me-Thanks!

              oil and manual

Lots of oil threads in the past. Use a good non-synthetic (semi-synthetic seems to be ok) and change oil and filter every 3,000 miles. In addition to the Castrol, Mobile Delvac 1200 and Shell Rotella are used by a lot of owners (I use the Rotella) with excellent results.

Oil filter is the Phram CH6002 or equal, NAPA number is (I think) 4933. Look on past threads for alternate numbers. Both these filters come with the "O" rings you need when you change the filter. Be advised there is a small and easy to loose washer on the top of the oil filter that is not included with the replacement.

XJ service manual is part number LIT-11616-02-78. Your local dealer should be able to order you a copy. Price is normally in the $42 - $45 range. Rockjoc, on this list, has done a major service to XS/XJ owners by compiling service manuals on a CD. Contact him at http://www.xs11.com/forum/member.php...fo&userid=1222
for more information. Cost is $10.00.

The XJ is significantly different in some areas than the XS, so although some of the information is common, you really need the XJ manual to cover all topics. Electrics are very different on the XJ, for example. The manual includes wiring diagrams and they are more complicated, with extra circuits, than the XS versions. Some differences are physical, for example, the 4-way flasher switch on the XJ is on the right-hand handlebar vs the left handlebar on XS models. Yamaha added a cable-operated choke to the XJ's left handlebar, requiring the relocation of the switch.

HP on the XJ was not published in US advertising literature. The original '78 XS was rated at 95 HP, but after the first year the compression ratio was lowered. Most agree the XJ had a little less power, as Yamaha went to the YICS induction system and a different ignition advance curve to try to reduce emissions as new standards were coming into effect. A "guess" as to the XJ's true HP would put it down a few HP from the '79 - '81 XS models. If you found a figure of 85 hp, the XJ would probably come in at about 80 - 82 HP.

I used Mobil-1 in all of my vehicals until I got this XS1100. I tried Mobil 20w50 Red Cap in this bike and found that the starter clutch would stick and make a dragging noise often after the engine would start. I changed over to Rotella Dino 10w40 and all starter problems ended.

When I owned my 1500 Goldwing, I used Rotella Synthetic and Mobil-1 bike synthetic oil and had no problems, but many of the early 1100-1200 Wing owners had lots of problems with their starter clutches with synthetic oils.

                  Good.

Thanx all for answers. I now have a clue of what oil i should use.
The winter is just araound the corner now, and i soon have to change the oil and park the bike for 5-6 months.

I think that i have got a manual to, thats nice! I got the bike 1 month ago and planned to check it throug the winter, so its really helpfull to have a manual for it.

By the way, this bikes realy are nice to ride with nice handling, good power and good looking. As far as i know my bike is the only one of its kind in norway and thats make it even better.

                  So again thanx.

                  Lars
