I'll bet Randy could help you with that. I think Randy is in the process of reverse engineering them or something.

Yes, that's true, I am reverse engineering the XS TCI, but only the 2H7 series. The later versions ( and the XJ's I'm told) use an electronic advance on the board, which I will not be able to reverse engineer.

I have my prototype ready and I have test run it. I was planning on bringing it to TWO in October and giving a mini-seminar on it, but that plan is quickly disintegrating (work).

So, I guess the next best thing will be to post a guide on how to do it at a later time.

Meanwhile, I sent you a PM, xs1100yam in answer to your question.

I have an '81 and have read that the CDI does the advance, but I have a vacuum advance on the engine. Does the '81 have both, or should mine not have the vacuum advance?

            Hey there Bill,

I've got the 81 also, and the TCI does control one aspect of the timing curve, the vacuum controls another! On the earlier models, the timing plates had a centrifugal advance which contributed to the advance curve with the vacuum advance. So, on our bike they incorporated the centrifugal advance control into the TCI. So...yes, we still need the vacuum advance!!!

And, of course, the "black boxes" are not interchangeable
Using an earlyer (type 2H7) in place of a second generation one will works... ...but poorly

Use an earlier box, and use the earlier reluctor assembly to get the advance right.

Anybody heard of the Hyperpak ignition modules? They pop up on Ebay from time to time and it says they work on XJ's.

Here's an email I sent the company:

What specs can you give me about the Hyperpak for the XJ1100 ignition
unit. I'm very interested in it, but I don't want to be the first to
                  try it out...

Have you sold many for that bike? On Ebay it says that they will
greatly increase performance. In what ways specifically?

                  Thanks for your time!

                  And their response:

Hi there, thanks for your enquiry. We have been manufacturing the Hyperpak
brand since the early 1980's. Whilst some units have only been recently
sold through Ebay they have been sold for many years, mainly throughout
Australasia, very sucessfully. If you check on some of our feedback on
people that have used the FJ and XJ's you will see that you would not be the
'first'. And you will see that our customers have been more than satisfied
                  with the results.

Basically the specs on the unit in terms of performance is that they run a
modified timing curve, running approx 5 degrees more advance than the
original, with heavier drive transistors etc. Your most noticeable
improvement would be your bottom to mid range, and will taper out toward the
top but still will run improved performance all the way thru. It is
impossible to give you exact figures because it is dependant upon the
condition of the bike it goes on; tuning etc, mechanical condition.

                  Regards
                  Wayne

I'll dig up the url later if anyone's interested. They're based in New Zealand.
