Hi. Just happened to see this carb problem thread but looks like everyone had super ideas and should have you going. I've been a proponent of cleaning carbs for a long time on the list and they CAN'T BE CLEAN ENOUGH! ha!

As an option (not everyone likes cleaning carbs) I would like to suggest investing in a set of Mikuni RS36 carbs. I've run these - they're flat slide, smooth bore carbs. They run about $650 new and are a bolt on fit.

The performance boost is ....impressive. of course you may not be ready to shell 1/2 as much for carbs as you have in the bike. dragbikes.com often has these used on the site for around $250. Of course with any used equipment, let the buyer beware but these are a no-other-mod, bolt-on option and will 1) eliminate the carb problem and 2) can actually give you a performance boost.

Oh, one last point. Because of the larger throats (2mm larger dia) and because of the smooth bores (don't hold the fuel in suspension as well at low throttle settings) mileage may drop slightly (I didn't really see this) and low end torque suffers a little. This isn't really a problem with the XS, even loaded down (many on the list can vouch for my loading of an XS!) For that softening of the bottom end you gain an unbelieveable midrange / topend punch!

    Ciao
