  • 2 ques: kick starter, and forward ctrls

Hi. two questions. first. i just bought my 1979 xs1100, and the info is that is came with a emergency kickstarter, but he couldnt find it. so i dont know what its like. is this a removable kick starter, or is it something that stays on? is he just s weirdo, or is it suppostd to come off at nite?

number 2: what's the general consensus on the forward controls? should i check out something with linkages, or just go with highway pegs?

    thanks,
    1979 XS1100 Special

I don't know of to many xs11's with a kick starter. all the ones I've seen just have a rubber or plastic plug where one would be. I imagine that you'd be better off trying to push-start it anyway.
I would think it could be removed fairly easily.
As far as the forward linkage, I've covered the web and done a fair amount of shopping for available stuff, and I've never seen a set. I think most people(including myself) settle for crash bars with highway pegs. Thats not to say that you couldn't find someone to custom make you some forward controls though.

      Kick Starter

Yeh it's removable. Don't know for sure which years it came on, but my 78E is under the air box in front of the rear master. If it's there you will see a wing nut holding on a black sheet metal cap. Remove wing nut, under that is the kick start lever, on the other end of it is a spring clamp thats pretty tight, just pull it out.

The kick starter, I believe, came on the 78 and 79 models. I have one on my 79sf. Every now and agian I'll use it just to make sure it still works ( also works good betting with the guys how many time it takes to kick start for beer )
I have seen foward controls/floor boards for the XS1100 on Ebay, It's been awhile since I've seen any for sale, I think this was an aftermarket add on that you could buy back when theses bikes were new, Don't know for sure though. I do know that they are very rare. When they do show up on Ebay, or if you can find them, you can expect to pay around $150.00 to $250.00 for them. I use engine case gaurds with clamp on hyway pegs. Alot cheaper and when I get to some twisties in the road. I have the option of the center pegs for better stability and handeling let alone balance and feel but to each there own.

There have been several forward control threads. There were some system sold for the XS/XJ, and if you are lucky enough to find them, the price is fairly high. There are 2 less expensive alternatives, but both require some tinkering.

First is to find a set of early (1000cc) gold wing forward controls and adapt them. Indy Rick wrote up a process to do this; major portion is re-working the rear brake linkage, specifically you have to cut and modify the rear brake lever, but can be done. These sets go for as little as $50.00. Turns out some Hondas use the same spline on the shift lever as our Yamahas, so the gear shift side of the conversion is cleaner than you might think.

Other option is to go with mini floorboards, like those supplied by Drag Specialties, and a heel-toe shifter. This is not as nice as full forward controls, but do give a bit more comfort than stock pegs on long hauls. I went this way, can pull the boards and put the stock pegs back on in 10 - 15 minutes or less. Heel-Toe shifter (not shown, photo taken while using stock shifter) is from a Honda trail 90.

I built my own mounts as the package I bought on eBay didn't include them, and was able to make the right-side bracket a little longer to guarantee clearance for the brake pedal. Any qustions contact me off-line, or I can post more complete details if anyone is interested.

I like the boards for long-distance rides, more comfortable and a lot less vibration, but there are a couple drawbacks. 1. You loose some cornering clearance. 2. Since you can't 'rock' your foot up and down like you can on a peg you do have to get used to a different shifting style, one of the reasons I ended up going to a heel-toe shifter. If you do a lot of canyon carving or riding through the twisties you may not like this arrangement, but it is easy enough to convert back to stock pegs/shifter for that type of riding.
