Yes, Opening a new thread would have been smarter. I'll check the kill switch & wiring. This was something I hadn't considered. Note: This problem showed up after I installed an XJ alernator and a new R&R regulator. If no joy today, I'll start a new note.
Thanks for responding. You may have identified my problem. On a related topic, I'm riding my other bike, the XJ1100, runs like a big cat! Stan H.'80 XS1100LG Midnight Special

I'm new to this particular bike community, but have a long mechanical background, and i have seen water in the fuel cause the problem's your having. May be a ridiculously easy fix, but i would try flushing my tank and carb's out really good and make sure there is no water in there. Best of luck. check voltage drop
This might be totally off the wall, but have you checked the connections at the fuse box for the ignition fuse? Maybe a poor connection at the fuse or on the back of the box might be causing the ignition to have low power intermittently. Or it could be a problem in the ignition switch or the emergency kill switch. Does your bike have the tip-over switch under the seat like my XJ?
Just a guess, good luck wrenching, those mysterious intermitent questions can make you crazyIt is a great big beautiful world out there

It could possibly be bad conections at the kill switch or in the ignition switch and you should eliminate those if you can. But, I've also been thinking it might be some bad valves, either not closing because of 0 clearance or maybe bent or burned. Timing Advance
I checked the compression, 160, 160, 150, & 160. Then I replace the spark plugs and wires, no change; I hooked up vacuum guages to the intake manifolds, the vacuum at idle and at 4500 RPMs during the misfire & surging phases were steady and equal on all cylinders I check the voltage at the coils,13.2 at idle, and 14.2 at 4500 RPMs. I replaced the gas.
Team, I'm convinced the timing advance is not working. I'll pull out the good old reliable timing light and test this concept. We'll know something soon. Thanks for responding. I'll be sure to post my results. Stan H.'80 XS1100LG Midnight Special
