  • Rear wheel setup!

    Hello
I am trying to install the rear wheel on a 1980 1100 XS Midnight Special. I must be missing some parts because there is a gap on the right side between the disc brake and the swing arm. Can anyone explain, or send me a photo on how this goes together. I have the rear wheel, and the torque plate where the disc brake is mounted, and that is it. I have some spacers from a xs11 1978, but they will not fit, it gets to tight. Thank you in advance any help is much appreciated.

Look here, the navigation is self explanitory. You will eventually see what is missing. In fact here is the page you need http://parts.yamaha-motor.com/script...rtISAPI.dll?MF

Call me slow, but I couldn't get that last link to work.
      Try this page.http://houseofmotorcycles.bikebandit..._name=XS1100LG
Look at part # 35 and 36. I would imagine that you are missing one or both.
You can use that site to double check the part numbers from other models, to see what is interchangable.
      Good luck

I AM missing both of those, I do have the parts from a 1978 Special, but they must be different, when I install (with a struggle) it is not room left on the axle to put the nut on it. So the ones for the Midnight must be different. I also read somewhere in this forum that the midnight special only have one spacer, not two like it showes in the links.

midnite, if your parts bike is a 78, it is a Standard, not a Special, and yes, I think that they used a differant set-up.
In that picture, it shows only one spacer. The other is a dust seal. (or something like that).
I can look and see if I have one that will work for you, but it will be coming from a box of parts, not directly from a bike.
I have no way to tell the actual size of the spacer that is on the Special.
Can you measuere the one that is too large, and also guestimate what size you think will work?
I don't mind taking the time to look, if I have a clue as to the size.

I recently sold the rear wheel and all of the axel accessories from my midnight parts bike, but I have boxes of loose stuff.

            Midnite,

The 80-81 Specials, regular or MN have only 1 Spacer, the part #that was furthest away from the axle, the other is a dust cover only, not a spacer!! However, on mine, the outer spacer and dust cover seem to be one piece, cause right behind it is the seal!! Mine's an 81SH. Good Luck.

Thanx guys, newmaac it looks like the thickness of that washer, if it is one piece serving as a dust cover/spacer about 16 millimeters, or 5/8 inch, the outside diameter of the dust cover is about 52 millimeters, or 2".
