  • Upper Fork Tubes

Hi everyone. Been a long time.

Does anyone know of a way to refinish the upper fork tubes? Does anyone do that? Mine have a few pits in the area that doesn't go into the lower fork. Can they be chromed?

I finally got back to my restore (after a 3 or 4 year lull in case anyone remembers me from the forums before) and I think I can get everything else chromed, powdercoated, painted, or replaced.

I put mine in the lathe and polished with brown scotch brite, and finished with X fine crocus cloth. Still look very good, and new seals don't leak.

I talked to a chrome shop in Vancouver, WA that was willing to redo a set of fork legs but as I recall it would have been up around $150 for the pair.

Well, 4 years ago when I did my resurrection on my 81SH, I got a new set of uppers made by Forks by Frank, since I also wanted them 4" over length, ran a bit over $200.00 back then for the pair.

By the time you add, shipping there and back to the chromer, comes close to this price, although I guess they're probably a bit more by now!? Just another option!

Funny thing about the forks by frank

So the 'NOS' downtubes I won on ebay had the 'forking by frank' on them. So clearly, not new old stock. But when I showed them to D.P. Larmee, he was like, did you know this guy's shop is about a mile from us?

Just thought it was pretty effin' interesting.

But since it's so close to me, I'd be happy to run over there to talk to the guy if anyone wants some more info on his stuff.

I'd like to know even if it's only for future reference.

I'd love to know what he charges to refurbish or remake these. That would be more of the option I'd like.

I just received a quote for 79 special fork tubes from Forks by Frank in the mail. They are 199 per set plus the COD fee. He estimates the shipping and COD fee to be about 16 bucks. He doesn't take credit cards.

I'll go ahead and order a set today. I'll let you know how they look when they arrive.
