  • XS-SG smoking BAD...

'thought I'd get up early (4am) and change the exhaust system from 4-1 to 4-2 before leaving for the shop...
THIS was a real 'pill' without a center stand - took 2 hours.
Started the bike and it was a bit quieter, and ran pretty good... then it started smoking white billowing CLOUDS of smoke (from the #3/4 side) - it progressively got worse so I shut it down - I was afraid my neighbors would call the EPA and turn me in for gross polluting...

...so, what would cause this HUGE smoking - and from only one side? I pulled the plugs and they were a light grey/tan...
I want to get this thing sorted out before my grand canyon trip in 3 weeks... (*IF* possible) TIA, Ron

You didn't say if the exhaust you installed was new or used. If used, it could be something in the pipes. Did you get a chance to smell the fumes? It could be oil, or it could be a mouse nest, or even the whole mouse.

the exhaust system (stock) is used... blew out the system with 200psi compressor before installation... it has most of the muffler 'guts' 'broken in' so it's not as restrictive as a new one, and is not as quiet, but a bit more 'stock' sounding than the 4-1.
I need a more 'conservative' exhaust going thru S.Utah, and the N.Ariz areas - 'don't need to draw the local constable's attention...

the bike runs ok, but after about 2 min.s it starts billowing clouds of white smoke... it doesn't smell any 'worse' than the 'normal' exhaust...

As far as I know, white smoke usually happens more on a water cooled engine. This is usually a condition when water is getting burned in the cylinder from a cracked head.

Being that the XS is not water cooled, that would not be the issue. It may be possible that there is some water trapped in the exhaust. Could be the compressed air you were blowing through had a lot of moisture in it. Since it takes a couple of minutes, that seems logical for it might take that long for the exhaust to heat up the muffler.

Since you say it happens after a few minutes, that would be my guess. Although another issue could be water in the fuel line too.

If you only ran it for a little bit, maybe you should run it some more to see if the smoke reduces.

          water

I would tend to agree with the water theory.Hey it could happen,XSpesaly if you checked the plugs and they were fine.

Sound like water in the pipes to me, take it out and ride it. If anybody asks tell them your fogging for the culex mosquito. If it is water it will go away in time.
There's always a way, figure it out.

...this has been one *L*O*N*G* day - I can't wait to get home and take my XS SG out for a ride (I think I'm 'addicted' to this bike!) to check out how it rides, how much it smokes, and *IF* it stops...

Pat Kelly (who posts here from time to time) stopped on by my shop to see my bike... this is the ONLY day this month I haven't ridden it... he thinks the bike might be running too lean, because of the more restrictive exhaust system. Hopefully we can get together soon and he can point out some of the finer 'idiosyncricies' of the XS - I can't wait to learn...
Especially after see his XS1100E ($60 gem) - it looks good, runs great, and after looking at it for a while I noticed all SORTS of 'trick' things that Pat had done to it. He pays attention to detail, and it shows!
...I STILL can't believe he picked his bike up for $60 - what a GREAT deal!

'got up before the sun came up this morning and 'went for a 100 mile ride before going to the shop.
There must have been something in the exhaust pipe that was smoking - cause it's not doing it now... burnt it out I guess. This exhaust system is going to work out great for my NV, AZ, UT ride - it's a LOT quieter than a 4-1/Kerker/Supertrapp and the bike STILL has LOTS of pep - I thought I'd lose more acceration than I'm experiencing - these XS1100 are amazing.
Pat Kelly told me yesterday that above ~5000 ft elevation the XS 'suffers' a little bit - and where I'm going is >9000 ft

'can't wait - middle of nowhere and nothing but the open spaces, the XS and God - it can't get much better than THAT!
