  • Stock Air Box Intake

I have a 1981 XS1100SH. I want to reinstall the original stock air box intake in place of the pod filters. I have located one at a local bike junk yard, but the proprioter is not sure which year bike the air box he has comes from. My question is: are 1979 thru 1981 air boxes interchangeable or are they adaptable. If know one knows where can I find out? Is there some central tech number at Yamaha that I could call.

    Thanks

All 78's and 79's have two extra nipples on the top front of the airbox for the carb vents. However, these can be used on 80 and 81's, just block off the vents. They are nipples for 1/4 inch hoses that attach to the early carbs to vent the float bowls, one for carbs 1-2 and the other for carbs 3-4. You can seal them with just about anything that will fit snugly inside, or pop them out and replace with bolts, nuts and washers. All the XS11's use the same filter, and the boxes are otherwise identical. Just be sure to use the rubber snorkel that comes up under the seat. This is part of the tuning for proper air flow. Some ppl have drilled more holes in the air box for improved air flow, but it is my belief that the Yam engineers designed the boxes for the best air flow on stock engines. I use the K-N filter in mine, the REAL K-N filter, and I feel that this is the best for a stock engine. The fake K-N's are garbage.
