  • 79SF front seat bracket fit problem?

Anyone have a problem with the small tab that should fit under the bracket welded to the stem that the gas tank bold goes into.

It appears that mine should be about 2 inches lower to be able to come close to grabbing it. Is this something others have experienced or do I simply have the wrong seat?

I had a similiar problem when I got my bike. Wrong seat pan. You should be also be able to tell if the to rocking bolts that tighten the seat down are not in the right place.

I ended up buying another seat off of Ebay. Need to get it recovered though eventually.

You apparently have a standard seat pan that you are trying to fit on a special. Your TCI box is mounted UNDER the seat on a special, and is mounted BEHIND the seat on the standard. The special seat pan is indented where the TCI mounts. On the back of the standard seat pan there are two small holes and two studs to mount the plastic cover that covers the TCI. I once read a post where someone relocated the TCI to the rear of the seat so he could use the standard seat on the special. I am not sure if this works, I haven't tried it myself. If you unbolt your TCI and set it off to the side, see if the seat will fit. Otherwise you will have to get the correct pan. If it does fit, then you can re-locate the TCI to the rear of the seat. Post back if you try this and it works, as I am curious. I measured the location of the rocker bolts, and they are in the same place, but I don't know if they are the right length. If you try to use the standard seat, let us know if it will work. Some one else may be in the same boat.

My E came with the double bucket seat and the tab won't fit under the rubber piece. It will fit (barely) without the rubber.
As a side to that I do have the rear of the tank shimmed up about 3/4" because the petcock outlets rub on the airbox (left) and carb (right) and a hole develops in the fuel lines.
I replaced the original petcocks when I bought the bike as Yamaha didn't have the diaphrams available (I hadn't found this site yet).

What did you replace them with? I need petcocks for the Special tank I'm putting on my Standard- it came without an octopus; just uses a gravity feed with inline filters.

I got them from Yamaha, they said it was the replacement number.
They've been on for 3 years now and work ok but the fuel line (particularly on the right side) rubs on the carb diaphram cover and develops a hole in the line.
Rebuilt original petcocks are working great and no more rubbing.
If you're interested in the petcocks I just removed let me know and I can send some pics.

Back to the seat thread.... I installed a NOS seat I won on Ebay and I no longer have issues with the tab on front. I even reinstalled the rubber peice the tab goes under. Looks like the touring seatpan is a little bigger than the stock seat.
