  • Will a '79sf tank sender work in an '80g and vice versa?

I have a really good 80g tank with a bad float (sender). I like the simplicity of the '79sf sender - no float - just a switch. Anybody ever tried to swap these things? I suppose the guage in the 80g wouldn't work with the on/off switch sender type from the 79... ?

Anybody have a good spare sender for an 80g?

As far as I know, you can't use the Special float switch with a Standard. If you did manage to install it, your fuel gauge would only show full or empty, with nothing in between.

You may be able to take your existing switch apart and repair it. I did that on a friend's GL1000 a few months ago. The contact surfaces were corroded badly, and the lead that connects to the wiper had worked loose and had to be soldered back on. A few minutes with a soldering iron and contact cleaner and it was good to go.

I could certainly do that. I need to make absolutely sure it's not a guage problem before tearing into the tank again... but this is the 2nd guage I've tried on it and they both show empty all the time, so I think it's the sender.
