wire thing
I've got one and it is the easiest way to get tire off on the side of the road. Had a rear tire flat one time in the middle of nowhere. Took out the toolkit and used wire thing by feel in pitch dark had the tire off in less than 5 minutes. My 78E has a luggage rack so I even had to lean the bike over to get the tire out. Saved removing a whole bunch of bolts. Oh yeh stock exhaust goes beyond the axel bolt. I'd spend the $10. bucks plus freight to Scalded Dog in a heartbeat. There's always a way, figure it out.

So that's what it's for!
The cable & lever were missing from my XS11SG toolkit too (or perhaps they were never there?)
Anyhow, by the 3rd time I pulled the back wheel I had gotten my backordered Clymer book that carefully told how to use the thing to remove the back wheel but never mentioned why it was necessary.
Before getting the book I had happily just pulled the wheel without using the device or even being aware of it's existence.
I did wonder why I should have needed it, some weird thing to do with spline alignment perhaps?
And now I know. The long mufflers on the Standard bikes get in the way. Simple as that. I suppose that if I had a Standard it would have been obvious.

Hey Ken, I have a couple of them.
Atleast one good used one, and one NOS.
I will part with one for a reasonable price, if you decide not to attempt making one.
Let me know. You can get me offlist, if you want to.Mike

Gaffer,
Take a look at the 'battery vent tube routing diagram' . That's where the cable useage diagram is on my 78F. The sticker is on the document holder under the left side cover. At least, on my 78 that's where it is. Location may vary.

which effin' manual?
Hi Gaffer,
I looked through my Clymer too and I can't find the diagram neither but I know I saw it somewhere.
If not Clymer then maybe the hardcover Haynes that I once borrowed through inter-library loans or possibly the CD that Rockjok sells for US$10 (plus postage to UK in your case)
rockjok@imt.net
Though that CD don't have an index that a computer-illiterate like myself can find and it's a tedious job to open it page by page.
As I remember the diagram,
first take off the seat, loop the single eye on one end of the cable over the small hook on the swingarm drive side & pass the cable over the frame tubes.
There's a hook on the brake side too. (now this bit is fuzzy in my memory) there is a double eye on that end of the cable. The lever uses one eye and a fulcrum point someplace to pull the swingarm up so the other eye will slip over the brakeside hook and hold the swingarm up.
Perhaps someone who has actually used the thing could post a "how to" ?

Gaffer, You have me a little confused.
I didn't think that they even made a Special until 79, and if I am not mistaken, didn't the cable only come in the tool kit for the Standard?
I was under the impression that there was some modification on the Special swing arm, that made the cable unnecessary.
Does that sound familiar to anyone else?Mike
