  • John Kirby, your TCI box is fixed

    John Kirby,

Somehow lost your private messages so I'm posting this one public because I can't find you by your real name.

Your TCI box is fixed. Just took it for a ride on the Swamp Thing without trouble. I'll drop it in the mail in your pre-addressed envelope.

    Enjoy!

    Randy

John Kirby? I'm not Kirby, but you do have one of my TCI's. Is this message meant for me?

      No, John.

I already sent you an e-mail message. Just so happens yours is done, too. Read your e-mail.

what are you finding wrong with the TCI boxes Randy? Is it the transistors and bad / corroded connection?

Yes and yes. It's a variety. The last three had just bad solder joints, the most common ailment. But another one of them had a bad resistor. That one took a while. These boxes are keeping me pretty busy, boys. You guys are blowing them faster than I can fix 'em!

            Hey there Randy,

Another question, are most of these boxes the 78-80 2H7 series!? Have you had the chance to look/inspect/work on the 4RO series from the 81's!? It's my understanding that they incorporated a little bit more computer stuff to provide control of the advance curve vs. just the vacuum/centrifugal devices, cause I think they don't have the centrifugal part!? I just looked at mine, and all I can see is the vacuum assembly. Also just checked the Parts Catalog, and it, too, doesn't show a centr. advance mechanism, just vacuum!!!

I have a spare in perfect working order, that I would be willing to LOAN you for analysis if you haven't come across one yet!

              TC.

Thanks for the offer. You are the first response with a 4RO box. I owned an 81 a while back and you're right. The 4RO is a bit different than the earlier boxes. I would welcome the chance to take a look inside a 4RO.

The boxes I've been getting for repair are all 2H7's.

              Send the box to:

                Hey Randy,

I was wondering when you'd see my post, I saw you post several other messages day before yesterday but no reply to this one!?!?

It's boxed up, just have to get to Post Office to weigh it and postage it! I tried to take it apart, got the top cover off, found 2 screws on the bottom, but then realized that the circuit board was soldered to the wires that go to the plug slot outs, so you can't just pull it out, you have to De-solder those connections to get the board out! What a pain!! I was careful not to crack the Circuit board! I just put it back together and boxed it up!

Have fun, will be interesting to hear what you find and whether you think these can be duplicated, or if I just need to pray and of course, keep this one as a backup!?!?

                  Top Cat,

They can be duplicated. I'm very close to road testing my replacement ignition box. Based on a 2H7. I'll post the results when I finish. Meanwhile, I'll keep fixin 'em!

Sure, Bruce. Send it over. The sooner the better, though . The winter is a long way off and if I have my bike laid up for the season, there's no way to test the box!?

                      Send to:
